Your Immediate Steps

Talk to no one.
Do not talk to anyone about your accident except the lawyers, paralegals, or investigators from our office. Always require identification and telephone number of the caller.

Records are important.
Keep accurate and detailed records of the following:

  • Lost work time and wages
  • Medical expenses of all kinds
  • Other losses directly related to injury
  • Your complaints and progress

Make sure you keep all receipts. Note dates and record your thoughts accurately. Have someone take photographs of your injuries (bruises, casts, etc.) as soon as possible after the accident, especially if you are hospitalized.

Offenses, fines, or disciplinary action.
Do not appear or give statements before any type of disciplinary board, court, or in any other proceeding without first notifying us so that we can have one of our attorneys with you to represent you at the hearing.

Pay hospital or doctor bills.
Have your own health insurance company pay as many hospital and doctor bills as possible. Your own auto insurance may also help with your bills. Doctors and other health care providers are much more cooperative when their bills are paid, especially if they are to be witnesses at trial.

Are you receiving treatment?
If you are required to be in any medical facility for any type of treatment, such as traction, surgery, or physical therapy, notify us so that we can have you photographed by our office staff. One of the members of your family may take these types of photos as well.

Keep souvenirs.
If your injury requires a cast, a brace, a traction device or other appliance, save it for evidence at trial.

Make an appointment.
Always call to make an appointment prior to coming to the office to discuss the case. Lawyers are constantly attempting to meet strict deadlines and may not have time to meet with you on a "drop-in" basis.

We need witnesses.
Should you learn the identity of any witnesses, immediately furnish us with their correct names, addresses, and telephone numbers. The sooner we can make contact with a witness the better, as the passage of time can interfere with a witness's memory.

Keep a diary.
This is one of the most important jobs you will have in the litigation process. Each party to the litigation should keep his or her own diary. The diary should record your injuries and progress on a day-to-day basis. This diary will help you to remember your experience more vividly. Use a calendar or notebook.

Evidence is a must.
Deliver to our office the negatives and prints of any photographs which you or anyone else has taken which pertain to your case. Please make us aware of any evidence that you know about that may help us prove your case. Save any physical evidence and discuss it with us.

Where are you?
Immediately advise us of any change in your address or telephone number.

Questions?
You are always welcome to contact anyone working on your case. We will probably not contact you until we have something definite to report. We will also contact you for strategy, statements, records, and preparation for trial.
