Estate administration can seem overwhelming, but understanding the process can significantly
ease the burden during a difficult time. Our team recognizes the importance of guiding families
through these complexities with compassion and expertise.

This type of administration involves managing a deceased person’s assets, paying debts, and
distributing the remaining property according to the will or state law if no will exists. The
process ensures that the deceased’s wishes are honored and can provide closure for the loved
ones left behind.

First, the deceased person’s will should be filed with the appropriate probate court. If no will
exists, the estate is considered “intestate.” Then, the court will appoint an administrator.

Next, the appointed administrator must locate and inventory all assets. This may include, but is
not limited to real estate, bank accounts, investments, personal property, life insurance,
retirement accounts, business interests, and cryptocurrencies. The estate assets typically do not
include assets that are jointly owned or have beneficiaries listed.

Before distributions can be made, the estate must settle outstanding debts, expenses, and taxes.
This can include final income tax returns, estate taxes, liabilities incurred by the deceased, and
administrative expenses, just to name a few.

Once debts are settled, the executor distributes the remaining assets to beneficiaries as outlined
in the will or, if there is no will, according to state laws. After all assets have been distributed and
obligations fulfilled, the estate can be formally closed, releasing the executor from their duties.
